Walsboro Nov 22 - 1883 W W Baker Esq. Dear Sir in reply to yours of the 20th My opinion in regard to intimidation being used by the white People to prevent the Negroes from exercising there [sic] right of Suffrage in the late Election, I will Say that I never Saw more freedom exercised at the Poles [sic] than I Saw at Midlothian on the day of Election. Every one! both white & Colored, Seemed at perfect liberty to vote as they pleased. The Election was as quiet and orderly as any I ever attended [test] i am editing this page and the allegations made by Norther Papers against the White People in regard to intimidation, as far as My observations have been, is entirley [sic] without foundation
