Title

Letter to Hon. Geo.D.Wise, Richmond, Va. from J. Stebbins, South Boston, Va.

Subject

Virginia elections, 1883

Description

Racial tension and violence accompanied Virginia state elections in 1883 when Democrats succeeded in ousting the more racially-egalitarian Readjuster Party. Riots centered in Danville, but tension and unrest spread to neighboring regions. In the aftermath of the election, local and state political committees sought testimony and affidavits about the conduct of the election in various jurisdictions throughout the state.

This letter is an eyewitness account of events in South Boston addressed to a committee (unnamed) appointed to investigate events surrounding the election.
